Central Indiana: TWA Captain and Passengers Observe Red Object Pacing Aircraft
On April 27, 1950, over central Indiana, a TWA captain, copilot, flight attendant and passengers watched a dull red object pace their plane at half a mile for 7-8 minutes before it descended toward South Bend.
Background
At 6:20 p.m., over central Indiana, on April 27, 1950, a TWA captain, his copilot, the flight attendant, and many passengers watched a dull red object overtake and pace their plane at a distance of half a mile. The pilot later reported: 'We watched it fly parallel to us for 7 or 8 minutes. I couldn't tell its shape, but I'd guess it was roughly 50 feet across.' When the copilot suggested flying closer, the object increased its speed, turned away, descended and seemed to disappear among the lights of South Bend.
