Background

Following a brief visit on the 23rd of July, the intruders were back in numbers on July 26, 1952. Beginning at approximately 9:00 p.m., between six and twelve unknowns were tracked by radar over the District and surrounding areas.

Second Intercept Attempt

At 2:00 a.m. two interceptors were scrambled from Wilmington. Having been present and mockingly apparent for several hours, the unknowns once again retreated when the jets reached D.C. radar range. Following a pass and return covering ten minutes, the pilots were directed back to Wilmington. Reportedly at the moment they left D.C.'s radar range, the unknowns reappeared on the screens. Finally, on retreat, one of the pilots gained visual recognition of multiple objects, which he described as blue-white lights tremendous in size.
