Background

Incident Details

Date & Time: August 31, 1954, approximately 7:10 p.m.
Location: Near Nowra, New South Wales, during night cross-country flight
Aircraft: Hawker Sea Fury piloted by Lieutenant J.A. 'Shamus' O'Farrell

Sighting Account

After contacting HMAS Albatross Naval Air Station, O'Farrell observed a brilliant light approaching rapidly from his one o'clock position. The object crossed ahead and positioned itself on his port side, appearing to orbit. A second identical light appeared at nine o'clock, passing approximately one mile ahead before repositioning. Both objects demonstrated crossing speeds exceeding anything O'Farrell had encountered during his 250 mph flight. He described seeing a vague dark mass with a white light mounted centrally on top.

Radar Confirmation

Petty Officer Keith Jessop, radar operator at Nowra, independently confirmed two distinct objects on the GCI remote display accompanying the Sea Fury. Ground control verified the radar contacts, providing corroboration for the pilot's visual observations.

Official Assessment

The Directorate of Naval Intelligence documented that O'Farrell was "an entirely credible witness" who appeared visibly shaken yet remained adamant about his observations. The incident remained classified until 1982, though details leaked publicly in December 1954.
