Background

Incident Details

In Fall 1956, a US Navy Super Constellation transport with over 30 pilots, navigators and flight engineers returning from Europe duty spotted lights below the plane about 50 miles northeast of Gander, Newfoundland. The lights spread, with the biggest one climbing toward collision path, then tilting and pacing at 300 feet distance. It appeared as a huge metallic disc, 30 feet thick centrally, 350-400 feet wide, rim glowing diffusely.

Witness Observations

The pilot first noticed the cluster. It accelerated ahead, tilted up and vanished in 5-8 seconds. Crew described maneuvers defying known aircraft capabilities.

Evidence

Gander Airport radar tracked a target near the transport, corroborating visual sighting.

Significance

Reported by Keyhoe and Bondarchuk, this close encounter by trained aviators underscores unexplained aerial phenomena near busy air routes. No conventional explanation fits size, speed and radar data.
