Golfo Nuevo: Navy detects circling USOs
Argentine Navy patrol ships detected two unknown underwater objects via sonar in Golfo Nuevo. Anti-submarine vessels attacked, but objects evaded and disrupted sonar systems.
Background
Initial Detection
On 30 January 1960, two Argentine Navy patrol ships used sonar to locate two unidentified underwater objects in Golfo Nuevo, Chubut, Argentina. One rested on the ocean floor while the other moved around it.
Military Response
Anti-submarine ships arrived and released depth charges. The objects rose to the surface, sped toward the bay entrance as ships fired upon them, then submerged again. Sonar then picked up four, later six, objects heading for the anti-submarine nets.
Disruption and Aftermath
An explosion near the bay entrance disabled the ships' sonar equipment. No further contacts were reported immediately. Witnesses included naval personnel on multiple vessels.
Significance
This military encounter with USOs (Unidentified Submerged Objects) demonstrated unusual maneuverability and resilience to attacks, fueling speculation on advanced technology or unknown phenomena. Cited in period newspapers and UFO research.
