Wright-Patterson AFB: Alleged Disc-Shaped Object Discovery
A naval exchange pilot and crew allegedly encountered a mysterious disc-shaped object in a restricted hangar at Wright-Patterson AFB, guarded by armed sentries. The incident resulted in a security reprimand for the officer.
Background
Incident Details
In April 1962, a US Naval Reserve captain attached to the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB led his crew on a running exercise through the base. The group inadvertently entered a hangar they believed contained equipment storage.
The Object
Inside, they observed a metallic disc measuring approximately 12β15 feet in length and 8 feet in depth. The object displayed no visible markings, insignia, or rivets. It was positioned on two engine test stands and cordoned off with rope.
Security Response
An armed air police sentry with a submachine gun confronted the group. Eight additional guards stood in formation around the object. The sentry ordered them to leave immediately.
Aftermath
One week later, the crew returned to their base in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The captain was subsequently reprimanded by a brigadier general of the combat wing for the security breach. He was pressured to deny having witnessed anything.
