On January 6, 1969, Jimmy Carter, then a future US President, and about ten members of the Leary, Georgia Lions Club witnessed a bright object in the western sky at around 7:15 PM. The sighting lasted 10-12 minutes, and Carter later filed the only official UFO report by a US president.

The Incident

It appeared about the size of the Moon, initially bright white, then changing to red, back to white, before receding into the distance.

The event occurred at approximately 7:15 PM and lasted ten to twelve minutes.

Official Report

In 1973, as Governor of Georgia, Carter filed an official sighting report with the International UFO Bureau and later with NICAP.

Presidential Promises

During his 1976 presidential campaign, Carter publicly promised to release all government UFO files if elected.

After becoming President in 1977, he directed NASA to investigate UFOs, but the agency declined.
