Coyne Helicopter Incident

A US Army Reserve helicopter crew of four, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Coyne, encounters a cigar-shaped metallic object during a routine flight over Ohio. The craft bathes the cockpit in green light and the helicopter is inexplicably pulled upward by nearly 2,000 feet despite the pilot holding a full descent. Ground witnesses independently corroborate the sighting.

Background

On the night of October 18, 1973, a UH-1H Huey helicopter of the United States Army Reserve encountered a mysterious object near Mansfield, Ohio, while en route from Columbus to Cleveland. The crew experienced a near-collision, instrument anomalies, and an unexplained ascent despite evasive maneuvers.

The Incident

The helicopter was cruising at approximately 2,500 feet above ground level.

The crew consisted of four experienced military personnel:
- Pilot Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence Coyne
- Co-pilot First Lieutenant Arrigo Jezzi
- Crew chief Sergeant Robert Yanacsek
- Flight medic Sergeant John Healey

At approximately 11:00 PM, Yanacsek noticed a red light on the eastern horizon that initially appeared to be distant air traffic.

Annäherung des Objekts

Within seconds, the light began closing on the helicopter at extraordinary speed.

Coyne attempted radio contact with Mansfield approach control but received no response — the radio had ceased functioning.

Recognising the collision danger, Coyne pushed the collective into a full descent, dropping the aircraft toward 1,700 feet at a rate approaching 2,000 feet per minute.

Das Objekt

The object halted directly above the helicopter, filling the cockpit windshield.

The crew described it as:
- Approximately 18 metres in length
- Cigar-shaped with a grey metallic hull
- Bright red light at the bow
- White light at the stern
- Distinctive green light that pivoted downward and flooded the cockpit interior with an intense green luminescence

Unerklärlicher Steigflug

Coyne noted that despite holding the collective in the full down position throughout the encounter, the helicopter's altimeter showed a climb.

The aircraft had been pulled upward from 1,700 feet to approximately 3,500 feet against the pilot's control inputs.

Abzug des Objekts

After roughly five seconds of hovering above the Huey, the object accelerated westward toward Lake Erie at tremendous speed.

The crew was left shaken but unharmed.

Radio function returned shortly afterward.

Witness Accounts

Multiple ground witnesses near Mansfield independently reported observing:
- A large, illuminated object
- A helicopter's lights exhibiting unusual vertical movement

Investigation

Coyne and his crew filed official reports.

They cooperated with multiple civilian investigators.

Significance

The Coyne helicopter encounter is considered one of the most credible military UAP sightings due to the calibre of its witnesses — four trained Army aircrewmen whose professional responsibilities required precise observation and flight-data awareness. The anomalous altitude gain, occurring while the pilot held a full descent, constitutes an instrumentally documented effect that defies conventional explanation. Independent ground corroboration from civilians who had no prior connection to the flight crew further strengthens the evidentiary basis of this case.
