Shabbona, IL: Pilot sees disc pacing aircraft
Pilot Hugo W. Feugen observed a disc-shaped object pacing his aircraft over Shabbona, Illinois, causing his compass to rotate. The object accelerated away at high speed after a brief period.
Background
Zeuge und Umstände On November 28, 1974, at 11:43 a.m., Hugo W. Feugen, a 53-year-old plant engineer from Mendota, IL, piloted his Aeronca Champion aircraft on a clear day over Shabbona, Illinois. While checking his position on a map, he noticed his magnetic compass rotating counterclockwise at four revolutions per minute.
Sichtung und Verhalten Looking left, he spotted a disc- or ellipse-shaped object flying parallel at the same 75-80 mph speed and altitude, positioned at 120° and about one-quarter mile away. Estimated size: 120 feet long, 30 feet thick. It paced him for 8-10 seconds, then tilted, revealing a round shape, before accelerating eastward at extreme speed and vanishing in under a second.
Effekte und Bedeutung The compass malfunction coincided with the object's proximity, suggesting electromagnetic interference common in pilot-UAP encounters. No other effects reported. This case highlights UAP pacing aircraft with physical impacts, documented by NICAP and Skylook.
