Raven Rock Mountain Complex: Military police observe multiple UFOs
During July 1976, security personnel at the highly sensitive Raven Rock Mountain Complex reported multiple anomalous aerial objects. Military police patrols observed three oblong craft hovering over the restricted facility, while additional witnesses sighted UFOs near ammunition storage areas and surrounding regions.
Background
In July 1976, numerous unidentified flying objects were reported over and around the Raven Rock Mountain Complex (Site R) near Mt. Airy, Maryland. This facility, often referred to as the 'underground Pentagon,' serves as a critical alternate command center for the Department of Defense, making the sightings particularly significant from a national security perspective.
According to military documents obtained via FOIA, two separate security patrols stationed at Site R observed three oblong objects hovering directly above the complex. Additionally, a desk sergeant reported witnessing a craft positioned approximately 100-200 yards above an ammunition storage area. Another Army police sergeant also reported encountering a UFO while driving to work in the vicinity of the installation.
All observations were formally reported to the Fort Richie Military Police. The incident remained classified until related documents were released to The Black Vault in September 1997 under FOIA Case 97-F-1677 by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. The case represents a notable instance of unidentified craft penetrating or surveilling restricted military airspace.
