Astrakhan: Spherical UFO tracked by antiaircraft
A spherical object was detected by an antiaircraft system near Astrakhan at 6,500 feet along the Caspian Sea coast. Fighters and a helicopter failed to intercept it after it evaded shots and ascended beyond reach.
Background
sighting In 1984, an antiaircraft defense near Astrakhan, Russia, detected a spherical unidentified object moving parallel to the Caspian Sea coast at approximately 6,500 feet. The object ignored all radio attempts to contact it, prompting a military response.
military_response Two fighter jets were dispatched but could not match its speed. Pilots fired upon the object, causing it to drop to 325 feet. As it neared Krasnovodsk (now Türkmenbaşy, Turkmenistan), a helicopter gunship was sent to engage, but the object climbed rapidly out of reach.
outcome The unidentified object then directed toward the Caspian Sea and vanished from radar and visual observation. No further traces were reported.
