Background
Background
On September 15, 1988, an Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) agent contacted the FBI Dallas field office with copies of documents purporting to describe Operation Majestic-12, allegedly a classified government committee overseeing UFO recovery and alien contact.
Document Acquisition
The AFOSI agent indicated the materials originated from an individual at an unnamed school who claimed to have received them through the mail. The source's identity was classified by AFOSI decision.
Investigation and Outcome
The FBI initiated an investigation into the documents' authenticity. By November 30, 1988, the AFOSI informed the FBI that no such committee had ever been officially authorized or established. The FBI subsequently declared the documents "completely bogus" and instructed the Dallas office to close the investigation.
Significance
This incident marked the first official government agency examination of the MJ-12 documents, which had circulated among UFO researchers since 1984. The documents were later confirmed to contain fabricated signatures and anachronistic formatting inconsistent with authentic classified materials.
