Gulf War 'Baghdad Billy': Unknown Craft Intercepts F-111 Aardvarks, One Crash
During Operation Desert Storm (January-February 1991), UFO researcher Joel Carpenter of 'Project 1947' finds a reference in a government collection of Gulf War military encounters indicating that several American F-111 'Aardvark' pilots reported being intercepted by Iraqi aircraft that approached them, illuminated them with searchlights, but never fired on them. The mysterious flyer is nicknamed 'Baghdad Billy' and becomes the subject of a homespun ballad by an American pilot. The document even states that an F-111 crashed on one occasion when its pilot attempted to escape from one encounter — far more serious than World War II foo fighter incidents, of which there are no known cases of aircraft being lost. Separately, a U.S. Army captain tells Dolan that during Desert Shield, his unit was stationed in the Iraqi desert. A superior ordered them not to fire on objects in a particular sector of the sky. A few nights later they saw several bright objects maneuvering extraordinarily. 'We could not have shot them down if we had tried,' the captain says. When asked if they were UFOs, he replied: 'Absolutely. Of course!'
