Background

On January 5, 2000, shortly after 4:00 AM, a truck driver in Highland, Illinois reported a massive, triangular object with multiple bright lights hovering silently over the area. Officers from multiple jurisdictions subsequently observed the object as it moved slowly westward across the St. Louis metropolitan area.

The Incident

Officer Craig Stevens of the Millstadt Police Department observed the object from close range and described it as enormous — estimated at two football fields wide — with three brilliant white lights at each corner. Officer Ed Barton of the Lebanon Police Department independently tracked the object and noted a striking characteristic: it accelerated from near-stationary to extraordinary speed 'in the blink of an eye.'

Witness Reports

A total of officers from five police departments filed reports:

  • Highland Police Department
  • Lebanon Police Department
  • Shiloh Police Department
  • Millstadt Police Department
  • Dupo Police Department

Police dispatchers' audio recordings documented the real-time communications between officers tracking the object.

Investigation and Findings

MUFON and other investigators found no conventional explanation for the sighting. The proximity to Scott Air Force Base led to inquiries, but the base denied any operations matching the description.

Significance

One of the best-documented multi-witness police cases in modern UAP history, with recorded dispatch audio providing contemporaneous evidence.
