Stephenville-DeLeon Corridor Mass Sighting: Eight-Plus Witnesses Across 100 Miles Report Sequencing Lights and Military Jets

On the evening of 18 November 2009, between approximately 19:00 and 20:05, at least eight independent witnesses across a corridor stretching more than 100 miles through central Texas β€” from Santo to Abilene β€” reported an array of high-intensity lights that appeared, flashed in sequence, went dark, and reappeared at nearby positions. The lights were described as yellowish-orange to amber, arranged in straight lines of three to seven, and appeared at altitudes between 200 feet and 10,000 feet depending on the observer's location.

Multiple witnesses reported military jets in the vicinity: one noted the jets appeared to be chasing the lights, while another heard jet engines after the lights vanished. The area around Lake Proctor is known for military training exercises including chaff and flare drops. One witness near Georgetown on I-35 described a large circular multicolored object hovering above a wooded area with spinning outer lights. A witness east of Breckenridge used binoculars to observe four amber lights in a row with a smaller flashing light at the leading edge β€” no fuselage or wings visible β€” traveling westward along the I-20 corridor.

The sighting is geographically and temporally distinct from the well-known January 2008 Stephenville event already documented in the database, though the same region continued to experience recurring anomalous aerial activity. MUFON investigated and interviewed all witnesses, whose accounts were consistent across the corridor despite the great distances between observation points.

Background

The Stephenville-DeLeon corridor mass sighting of 18 November 2009 represents one of the most geographically extensive civilian UAP events in the MUFON archive, with eight or more independent witnesses reporting consistent phenomena across a distance exceeding 100 miles in a single evening.

The Incident The observation window spanned roughly one hour and five minutes, from approximately 19:00 to 20:05 CST on 18 November 2009. Witnesses were distributed across the communities of Santo, Greens Creek, Stephenville, Dublin, DeLeon, Hico, Breckenridge, and as far as Georgetown (on Interstate 35) and Abilene (over 100 miles northwest of Hico).

Witness Accounts Key observations by location:

  • Santo, TX (~19:33): A resident feeding dogs observed four sequential single-light illuminations, then four tiny moving dots, repeating in three cycles. Estimated altitude approximately 200 feet, object length roughly 200 feet.
  • Greens Creek (between Stephenville and Dublin, ~19:44): A woman driving with two children (ages 4 years and 12 weeks) saw two then four lights in a straight diagonal line at 45 to 60 degrees elevation, stationary, fading within two minutes. She called her husband to report the sighting.
  • Georgetown, TX (I-35): A male passenger observed a large circular multicolored object (red, blue, yellow, green, white) hovering just above a wooded area. The outer lights appeared to spin while the center remained stationary. Jets appeared to be in pursuit.
  • DeLeon, TX (Highway 6, Leon River Bridge): A woman and her 76-year-old mother saw the lights. A separate witness driving from DeLeon toward Dublin also observed them.
  • East of Breckenridge, TX: Using binoculars, a witness with aviation familiarity observed four amber lights in a row with a smaller red-and-white flashing light at the leading end. Silent. No fuselage, wings, or tail visible. Estimated altitude 10,000 feet, distance approximately 20 miles, traveling westward along the I-20 corridor from Morgan Mill toward Baird. Visible for roughly two minutes.
  • East of Dublin, TX (~20:05): A resident turning off Christmas lights on the front porch saw an orange ball emit a smaller light that moved left, creating a second orange ball. The cycle repeated twice more within about ten seconds.

Analysis Multiple witnesses confirmed the presence of military jets in the area during and immediately after the sighting. The Lake Proctor region is a known military training zone where chaff and flare exercises are conducted; however, the witnesses' descriptions of structured, sequencing lights at extremely low altitudes do not align with standard chaff or flare deployment patterns.

Significance This event is distinct from the January 2008 Stephenville mass sighting (already in the database as `evt_2008_stephenville`). Local residents noted recurring anomalous aerial activity in the region dating back to at least October 2008, suggesting this area may represent a persistent UAP hotspot in central Texas.
