Versailles Missouri: Triangular Craft Landing, Humanoid Being, 40-Degree Compass Deviation, and Military Grid Search
In the early hours of 25-26 October 2009, beginning around 01:30, a resident of rural Versailles, Missouri (pseudonym Lennox Edwards) observed a stationary triangular craft with multicolored blinking lights approximately 0.7 miles north of his property. Seven smaller orb-like lights β orange and red β accompanied the craft in the adjacent field, transitioning from disc-shaped to compressed spheres over the course of about an hour before drifting toward the woods. The craft remained visible until approximately 05:30.
After about an hour of observation, a humanoid figure appeared on a ridge roughly 50 yards behind the house. The being stood approximately five feet tall, wore a horizontally black-and-white striped garment resembling a puffer jacket, and held an object to its mouth as if communicating. Its face and hands appeared white. Edwards and the figure stared at each other for several minutes before Edwards sent his 11-year-old son inside.
MUFON investigators arrived on 28 October 2009 and documented significant physical traces at the suspected landing site: a bare ground patch measuring 6.5 by 7.5 feet, completely cleared of leaf litter in an otherwise densely covered forest floor. A compass showed a 40-degree eastward deviation at the site. Two precisely paired holes (1 ft 4 in. square, 10 inches deep) were found 75 feet southwest. Raised earth mounds surrounded the clearing, two displaying unusual orange clay coloration. Broken branches and freshly uprooted small trees were documented.
The following evening, neighbor Nathan β a former Marine Air Wing member β observed four F-111 jets from Whiteman AFB flying slow grid patterns over the area shortly before 23:00, preceded by two military helicopters. Edwards himself saw jets deploying three flares while searching in grid patterns during the subsequent night.
Background
The Versailles landing incident of October 2009 stands as one of the most evidentially rich UAP cases, combining a sustained multi-hour observation of a structured craft, a close-range humanoid encounter, measurable physical ground traces with compass anomalies, and documented military search activity in the immediate aftermath.
The Incident
Lennox Edwards (pseudonym) first noticed unusual lights at approximately 01:30 on the night of 25β26 October 2009. Looking north from his rural property, he observed a triangular craft with multicolored blinking lights positioned low in the woods roughly 0.7 miles away.
- Main object: triangular craft with silver, green, blue, orange, and red blinking lights
- Seven smaller lights: three disc-shaped orange-red lights in a field to the west, three more further west, and briefly a blue light
- Over approximately one hour, the disc-shaped lights compressed into football-sized spheres and drifted slowly toward the forest
- The triangular craft remained stationary until approximately 05:30, when it vanished
The Humanoid Encounter
The humanoid appeared after about one hour of observation, standing on a ridge approximately 50 yards behind the house. Edwards observed it through binoculars and his wife confirmed observations from the bedroom window.
- Height: roughly five feet tall
- Clothing: loose-fitting horizontally striped black-and-white garment resembling a puffer jacket
- Left hand: held an object, repeatedly raising it to its mouth as if speaking into a communication device
- Feet: backpack-like object positioned nearby
- Appearance: face and hands appeared white (unclear whether skin or mask)
- Interaction: Edwards and the being maintained mutual eye contact for several minutes before Edwards sent his son inside
Physical Evidence
Two MUFON investigators arrived at 15:30 on 28 October 2009 and documented the landing site at 0.7 miles north with direct line of sight to Edwards' home.
Ground clearing:
- Dimensions: 6 feet 6 inches by 7 feet 6 inches
- Condition: completely free of leaf litter while surrounding forest floor was densely covered
- Soil: slightly elevated above surrounding grade, with northern edge showing cleanly scraped earth
Compass anomaly:
- 40 degrees eastward deviation from magnetic north at the center of the patch
- At 30 feet west: deviation remained 40 degrees
- At 30 feet east: deviation reduced to 20 degrees
- Confirmed as genuine by the lead investigator, a certified underwater navigation instructor
Paired holes:
- Location: 75 feet southwest of the clearing
- Dimensions: each approximately 1 foot 4 inches square, 10 inches deep
- Orientation: slanting downward
- Spacing: exactly 1 foot 6 inches apart
Additional findings:
- Raised earth mounds within a 25-foot radius of the clearing, ranging from football to double-football size
- Two mounds displayed distinctly orange clay coloration not matching surrounding soil
- Broken branches and several freshly uprooted small trees in the vicinity
- Geiger counter and EMF meter readings: no anomalous readings detected
- Edwards' dog Sofie remained calm at the spot where the humanoid had stood but refused to accompany the investigator further into the terrain
Military Activity
Nathan, a neighbor and former Marine Air Wing member with seven years of service, observed on the evening of 26 October: four F-111 jets from Whiteman Air Force Base (approximately one hour's drive away) flying slow, deliberate grid patterns over the area shortly before 23:00, preceded by two military helicopters circling for several minutes.
Edwards observed two military jets deploying three flares while executing grid search patterns on the night of 26β27 October between 01:30 and 03:00. Nathan assessed the grid activity as highly unusual β he had witnessed similar activity in the area only once before in his lifetime.
During the MUFON investigators' drive home from the site, they observed and photographed an anomalous stationary light in the northern sky that persisted for over one hour, slowly drifting west, disappearing, and reappearing β not matching any standard stellar or aviation pattern.
