Chilean Navy CEFAA UFO Video

A Chilean Navy helicopter films an unidentified object with a WESCAM infrared camera during a routine coastal patrol. After a two-year investigation, Chile's official UAP body CEFAA releases the footage in 2017, stating that no conventional explanation could be established for the observed phenomenon.

Background

On November 11, 2014, a Chilean Navy Airbus Cougar AS-532 helicopter detected an anomalous object during a routine daylight patrol along the Chilean coastline west of Santiago using its WESCAM MX-15D infrared camera. The object, invisible to the naked eye and undetected by radar, was investigated by CEFAA, which found no conventional explanation after two years of analysis.

The Incident

The helicopter was conducting maritime surveillance with the WESCAM MX-15D infrared and electro-optical turret.

During the flight, the crew spotted the object on infrared footage spanning several minutes.

It moved at an estimated velocity matching the helicopter's airspeed but produced no radar return.

  • Object not visible to the unaided eye
  • No radar return detected

Observations

At two distinct moments, the object discharged a trail of hot material or gas.

This created a visible thermal plume that dissipated behind it.

The crew attempted radio contact and checked with air traffic control.

  • No filed flight plan matched
  • No transponder signal detected

Investigation

Footage was submitted to CEFAA (Comite de Estudios de Fenomenos Aereos Anomalos).

CEFAA, under Direccion General de Aeronautica Civil (DGAC), was established in 1997.

It unites military, scientific, and academic experts for UAP cases.

The probe lasted two years, consulting image analysts, atmospheric scientists, astronomers, and aeronautical engineers.

Hypotheses Tested

  • Commercial aircraft with undetected transponders
  • Meteorological phenomena
  • Space debris re-entry
  • Medium-altitude drones
  • Various atmospheric optical effects

All hypotheses were systematically eliminated.

Results

In January 2017, CEFAA released the video publicly.

No satisfactory conventional explanation was identified.

The case gained international attention for the infrared evidence quality and CEFAA's credibility.

Significance

The Chilean Navy case demonstrates that credible, institutionally sanctioned UAP investigations exist beyond the United States. Chile's CEFAA represents a model of transparent governmental engagement with the phenomenon, combining military and civilian expertise under civil aviation authority. The two-year investigation and subsequent public release set a standard for methodical, open assessment that other nations have been slow to emulate.
