Background

In mid-June 2020, the U.S. Navy produced a classified information memorandum concerning Unidentified Aerial Phenomena. The document was prepared specifically for the Secretary of the Navy and consists of sixteen pages. Nearly two years later, the memo was obtained by researcher Alex Garcia through a Freedom of Information Act request. The U.S. Navy released the document in April 2022, citing national security exemptions to justify extensive redactions covering almost the entire content. The exemptions included (b)(1) for classified national security information and (b)(5) for deliberative process privilege. This release demonstrates the continued high level of classification surrounding UAP materials within the Department of the Navy, despite ongoing public and congressional calls for transparency.
