55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing

The 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, a U.S. Air Force government military unit, was established on 29 June 1948 and activated on 19 July 1948 at Topeka (later Forbes) AFB, Kansas. It conducted strategic reconnaissance, including charting photography, precise electronic geodetic mapping, and electronic missions from 1950-1954 at bases like Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico, and later Forbes AFB. Key activities involved global reconnaissance with aircraft such as RB-50s and RB-47Es, weather and photographic recon until the 1960s, and from 1966, SAC's airborne command post operations at Offutt AFB, Nebraska.
