Defense Technical Information Center
The Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) is a U.S. government agency, established in June 1945 as the Air Documents Research Center (ADRC) to collect German air documents post-WWII. It evolved through stages like ASTIA (1951), DDC (1963), and became DTIC in 1979, serving as the central DoD repository for scientific, technical, engineering, and business information. Key activities include collecting, processing, preserving, and disseminating DoD-funded research to support innovation, accelerate warfighter capabilities, and enable collaboration across government, industry, academia, and allies. Notable achievements encompass managing millions of documents, developing online retrieval systems since the 1960s, administering Information Analysis Centers, and facilitating classified/unclassified sharing for R&E efforts. Currently active under the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, DTIC at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, enhances technological superiority and reduces costs.
