The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is the United Kingdom government department responsible for implementing defence policy and administering the British Armed Forces. Headquartered in Whitehall, London, it is led by the Secretary of State for Defence and encompasses the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, and Strategic Command.

UAP Investigation History

The UK MoD operated a dedicated UFO Desk (originally known as DI55, later S4(Air) and AS2a) from 1950 until its closure on 1 December 2009. Over those six decades, the desk received and catalogued approximately 12,000 UFO reports from the public, pilots, and military personnel. High-profile incidents included the 1980 Rendlesham Forest encounter (USAF personnel on British soil), the 1990 Calvine photograph, the 1993 Cosford RAF event, and numerous radar-visual pilot reports.

Declassification

Between 2008 and 2013, the MoD released approximately 60,000 pages of UFO files to The National Archives at Kew, making it one of the most extensive government UAP disclosures globally. The former MoD UFO-desk officer Nick Pope (1991-1994) has become a prominent public voice on UK UAP history. The 2000 Condign Report — an internal MoD threat assessment — concluded UAP reports warranted continued attention but not panic.
