The Naval Safety Command (NAVSAFECOM), formerly Naval Safety Center, is a U.S. government military organization founded in 1968 through the merger of the Naval Aviation Safety Center (est. 1955) and Submarine Safety Center. It leads non-nuclear safety standards, expertise, and oversight for the Navy and Marine Corps Safety Management System. Key activities include developing safety policy, conducting mishap analyses, safety surveys ('white hat audits'), risk management training via NAVSAFENVTRACEN (training 10,000 students yearly), and cultural workshops to prevent mishaps, save lives, and preserve resources. Notable achievements: 70+ year legacy in aviation, afloat (surface/submarine/diving), and system safety; elevated to Echelon II command in 2022 with expanded authorities for policy and assurance.
