Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a U.S. Department of Energy research facility founded in 1943 as Clinton Laboratories during the Manhattan Project. Located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, it was established to pilot plutonium production and separation. After World War II, ORNL transitioned to peaceful research, becoming a leader in nuclear reactor technology, materials science, and basic scientific research. Key achievements include pioneering neutron diffraction studies (1944), developing accelerator programs, establishing the High Flux Isotope Reactor (1965), and advancing medical applications of nuclear science. The laboratory operates as a government-owned facility managed by private contractors and remains a major center for energy, environmental, and scientific research.
