Pilgrim Nuclear Station
The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (PNPS), founded in 1967 with construction starting in 1968 and operations from 1972 to 2019, is a closed civilian nuclear power plant in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA. Operated initially by Boston Edison, then Entergy, and now Holtec International for decommissioning under Nuclear Regulatory Commission oversight, it was a boiling water reactor generating 2,028 MWt. Key activities included electricity production using Cape Cod Bay water for once-through cooling, with notable issues like shutdowns (1986-1989), safety violations, radiation releases, and high waste storage. Achievements were limited to 47 years of power generation amid controversies over environmental impacts and security risks. Currently decommissioning since 2019, with license to 2032.
