The Special Air Service (SAS) is a British Army special forces unit founded in 1941 by David Stirling in North Africa during World War II as 'L' Detachment for deep reconnaissance and raids behind enemy lines. Government military, it specializes in counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, direct action, and special reconnaissance, with operations in WWII (North Africa, Europe), Malayan Emergency, Northern Ireland (1969-2007), and beyond. Notable achievements include destroying enemy aircraft in WWII raids and ambushing IRA teams like Loughgall in 1987. Much remains classified; it remains active as an elite corps.
