Alfred Lee Loomis
Alfred Lee Loomis (1887-1975) was an American physicist and inventor who played a significant role in early aerospace research and development. As a key figure associated with the origins of Project RAND within Douglas Aircraft Company's Engineering Division, Loomis contributed to foundational work on space technology in the mid-1940s. He was involved in discussions surrounding early satellite concepts, including the May 1946 RAND report 'Preliminary Design of an Experimental World-Circling Spaceship,' which preceded Sputnik by over a decade. Loomis's work bridged military research, scientific innovation, and strategic defense planning during the critical post-World War II period when space operations were being conceptualized as extensions of air operations.
