Eric M. Gairy
Eric M. Gairy, who was born in 1922 and died in 1997, served as Prime Minister of Grenada and became the first to hold that office upon the nation's independence in 1974. As leader of the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP), his political career encompassed significant roles leading to Grenada's independence; he was elected to the Legislative Council in 1951, winning seven of eight seats, and subsequently served as Chief Minister and Premier before assuming the prime ministership, advocating for and achieving Grenada's independence on February 7, 1974.
In 1978, Gairy proposed to the United Nations General Assembly the establishment of a United Nations department for UFO research. Despite United States opposition, a draft resolution was adopted, though the initiative collapsed when Gairy was ousted in a 1979 communist coup.
