Fred T. Goetting Jr.

Fred T. Goetting Jr., a U.S. Air Force 2nd Lieutenant and pilot, is known for his involvement in a notable UFO sighting on January 29, 1959, near Houlton and Chatham, Maine. While flying an F-94B interceptor at 23,000 feet, Goetting and radar observer Lt. Howard C. Kelley spotted a small gray oval-shaped object approximately 10° above their aircraft. Goetting pursued the object at 0.8 Mach for 8 minutes but failed to close the distance, ending the chase due to low fuel. The object was also visually confirmed by at least two other fighter aircraft from different squadrons. This case is documented in UFO historical records as an unidentified aerial encounter during the height of Cold War military UFO investigations.
