Born in 1958, the Australian pilot disappeared on October 21, 1978, at age 20, having accumulated over 150 hours of solo flying experience. He departed from Moorabbin Airport near Melbourne in a Cessna 182L aircraft, intending to complete a 40-minute trip west along the Australian coast to King Island before proceeding south over Bass Strait between mainland Australia and Tasmania.

During the flight, he reported an unknown aircraft hovering approximately 1,000 feet above him, describing the object as large with four bright lights. He radioed that his engine was running roughly and stated, "It's not an aircraft." His final transmission was interrupted by metallic scraping sounds before all contact was lost. Despite extensive search operations covering over 1,000 square miles, neither the aircraft nor the pilot were ever found.

The case remains one of aviation's most compelling pilot disappearances potentially linked to a UAP encounter, generating multiple theories including spatial disorientation, staged disappearance, and UFO involvement. The final radio transmission became one of the most widely cited aviation mysteries in history.
