Frederick Valentich (1958 – disappeared 21 October 1978) was a 20-year-old Australian pilot with more than 150 hours of solo flying experience who, on that day, departed Moorabbin Airport near Melbourne in a Cessna 182L β€” planning a 40-minute coastal flight west to King Island and then south across Bass Strait. During the flight he reported an object hovering about 1,000 feet above him with four bright lights, radioed that his engine was running roughly and stated "It's not an aircraft"; his last transmission was interrupted by metallic scraping sounds. Despite search operations covering more than 1,000 square miles, neither the aircraft nor the pilot were ever found.

  • Australian pilot, born 1958, disappeared on 21 October 1978 at age 20
  • Over 150 hours of solo flying experience
  • Departed Moorabbin Airport near Melbourne in a Cessna 182L
  • Planned 40-minute flight west to King Island, then south across Bass Strait
  • Reported an object hovering roughly 1,000 feet above with four bright lights
  • Radio transmission about rough engine running, stated "It's not an aircraft"
  • Last transmission interrupted by metallic scraping sounds; aircraft and pilot never found despite a 1,000-square-mile search area

For the UAP timeline, Valentich is probably the most famous pilot disappearance in aviation history linked to a UAP encounter: spatial disorientation, staged disappearance or UFO involvement β€” the open case remains a permanent reference point in the debate around pilot testimony.
