Grady L. 'Barney' Barnett (1906-1969) was an American civil engineer and long-standing official with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in New Mexico. He became a significant figure in UFO research history through his account of discovering a crashed flying saucer on the Plains of San Agustin, New Mexico, approximately 150 miles west of Roswell, in July 1947. Barnett reportedly observed the wreckage and non-human pilot bodies at close range without touching them. His secondhand account, first documented by UFO researcher Stanton Friedman in 1978 and published in 'The Roswell Incident' (1980) by William Moore and Charles Berlitz, introduced the controversial claim of recovered 'alien bodies' to UFO literature, though the account's location and details have remained disputed among ufologists.
