Josef Allen Hynek (May 1, 1910 β April 27, 1986) was an American astronomer, professor, and ufologist. He served as scientific advisor to U.S. Air Force UFO projects: Project Sign (1947β1949), Project Grudge (1949β1951), and Project Blue Book (1952β1969). Initially skeptical, Hynek evolved to advocate serious UFO study, criticizing Air Force dismissal of evidence. He founded the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) and developed the 'Close Encounter' classification system for UFO sightings. Key achievements include scientific analysis of UFO trace evidence and a 1978 UN speech urging global investigation. Notable books: 'The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry' (1972). Known as father of modern UFO theory.
