Jean-Pol Poncelet is a Belgian politician who served as the nation's Minister of Defense from 1985 to 1988, immediately preceding the famous Belgian UFO wave that commenced in November 1989. Born in 1940, he built his career within the Humanist Democratic Centre party, representing the Walloon region in federal government before transitioning to local politics. Although he was not in office during the peak period of triangular UFO sightings that generated international attention between 1989 and 1991, his leadership of the defense ministry occurred during the administrative tenure that would soon face unprecedented public pressure regarding unexplained aerial intrusions into Belgian airspace. Following his ministerial service, Poncelet served as Mayor of Charleroi from 2000 to 2006, concentrating on urban development and regional governance rather than defense or aerial phenomena. While his name occasionally appears in UFO literature due to his former position overseeing Belgian air defense capabilities, he is not known to have participated actively in UAP investigations, nor did he make significant public statements regarding the sightings that occurred shortly after his departure from the defense ministry.
