Robert P. Patterson (1891-1952) was an American jurist and government official who served as the United States Secretary of War from September 1945 to July 1947 under President Harry S. Truman, a critical period that bridged the end of World War II and the dawn of the Cold War. During his tenure, Patterson oversaw the massive demobilization of American military forces and the bureaucratic transitions that eventually led to the creation of the United States Air Force as a separate branch in September 1947. His time in office coincided with the emergence of the modern UFO phenomenon, including the Kenneth Arnold sighting in June 1947 and the Roswell incident in July 1947, though historical records do not indicate that Patterson played any documented role in the formulation of early military policy regarding unidentified aerial phenomena or the establishment of investigatory bodies such as Project Sign. Prior to his cabinet service, Patterson had distinguished himself as a federal judge and undersecretary of war, earning recognition for his administrative capabilities and legal expertise. He is not considered a significant figure within UAP studies and is primarily remembered for his contributions to military reorganization and postwar defense planning rather than any involvement with unexplained aerial phenomena.
