Samuel Coccius was a 16th-century Swiss chronicler who documented significant celestial events in his homeland. Serving as a local printer and historian in Basel, Switzerland, he worked during a period of considerable social and religious tension.

Coccius recorded a mass aerial phenomenon observed over Basel on August 7, 1566. According to his account, large black spheres appeared in the sky before the sun, with some objects turning red and fiery before fading and extinguishing. This phenomenon caused great alarm among the population, and the event was depicted in a contemporary broadsheet with woodcut illustrations.

The Basel celestial phenomenon of 1566 represents one of the earliest documented mass UAP sightings in European history. Similar events were reported in Nuremberg in 1561 and Stockholm in 1535, demonstrating that reports of anomalous aerial objects predate the modern UFO era by centuries. Coccius's broadsheet remains a valuable historical record, preserving witness accounts and visual depictions of the mysterious aerial events.
