Hynek becomes scientific consultant to Project Sign
Background
The U.S. Air Force hires 38-year-old astronomer J. Allen Hynek of Ohio State University as scientific consultant for Project Sign. His task: astronomically vet incoming UFO reports - that is, show that they are stars, planets or meteors. Hynek takes on the job with the sober disposition of a classic skeptic, expecting to trace 100% of cases back to conventional causes.
