J. Allen Hynek (1910-1986), an astronomer and professor at Ohio State and Northwestern universities, became a pivotal figure in UFO research as scientific advisor to U.S. Air Force projects starting with Project Sign in 1948, through Project Grudge, and culminating as chief consultant for Project Blue Book (1952-1969). Initially skeptical, Hynek debunked many sightings as misidentified stars, planets, or phenomena like swamp gas during Michigan's 1966 flap, drawing criticism from Gerald Ford. Over time, he grew convinced of unexplained cases warranting scientific inquiry, publicly breaking from Air Force orthodoxy.

In 1972, Hynek published The UFO Experience, introducing his iconic "Close Encounters" classification—First Kind (visual sighting), Second (physical effects), Third (entities)—which inspired Steven Spielberg's 1977 film, on which he consulted. That year, he founded the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) to legitimize ufology, investigating cases like the 1973 Coyne helicopter encounter and advocating transparency, including a 1978 UN speech. An "old-school conservative scientist" open to extraterrestrial possibilities yet cautious, Hynek analyzed trace evidence and radar data, defending both ETI and extradimensional hypotheses while questioning vast sighting volumes. His legacy endures through CUFOS. (612 characters)
