Project Blue Book

Background

Project Blue Book was a United States Air Force program established in March 1952 to systematically study unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and assess potential threats to national security.

• Headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio
• Third in a series of UFO investigation programs, following Project Sign (1947-1949) and Project Grudge (1949-1952)
• Initially directed by Captain Edward J. Ruppelt

Investigation and Findings

The program collected and analyzed UFO reports from military personnel, government officials, and the general public.

• Between 1947 and 1969, documented 12,618 UFO sightings
• Concluded most were misidentifications of natural phenomena, conventional aircraft, or classified reconnaissance planes such as the U-2 and A-12
• 701 reports remained classified as unexplained despite rigorous analysis

Termination and Legacy

Project Blue Book was terminated on December 17, 1969.

• Terminated following a University of Colorado report that found no evidence of extraterrestrial technology or national security threats
• Records now publicly available through the National Archives under the Freedom of Information Act
