Background

Project Grudge succeeded Project Sign in February 1949 as the US Air Force program for investigating UFO reports. The project adopted a largely debunking approach, attributing sightings to conventional explanations, unlike its predecessor.

  • Investigated 244 reports of UFO sightings
  • Produced a final report in August 1949 concluding UFOs posed no threat to national security
  • Concluded that UFO reports were misinterpretations of natural phenomena, man-made aircraft, fabrications, or hoaxes
  • Implemented a public affairs campaign to alleviate public anxiety about UFOs

UAP Involvement

Project Grudge focused on investigating UFO sightings with an emphasis on conventional explanations and debunking claims.

  • Attributed sightings to balloons, regular aircraft, optical illusions, or weather phenomena
  • Found no evidence that UAP sightings represented foreign technology
  • Recommended downsizing and de-emphasizing the program to reduce public "war hysteria"

Key Contributions

After the Air Force concluded that Project Grudge fueled public interest in UFOs, the program was terminated in August 1949. However, the UFO investigation mission was reorganized and relaunched.

  • Reorganized into Project Blue Book in March 1952 under Captain Edward Ruppelt
  • Project Blue Book continued UFO investigations until December 1969
  • Investigated a total of 12,618 UFO sightings across both programs, with 701 remaining unidentified
