SW New Mexico: Lear Jet crew tracks flashing red UFO

Crew of a Lear Jet at 41,000 feet over southwestern New Mexico observed a flashing red luminous object that split into four parts, emitted rays, and was tracked by radar. The object maneuvered near the jet, illuminated it intensely, and rapidly departed after radar merge indication.

Background

Sichtung und visuelle Merkmale At 10:00 p.m. on January 13, 1967, the crew aboard a Lear Jet flying at 41,000 feet over southwestern New Mexico spotted a flashing red luminous object at their 10 o’clock position. It divided vertically into four smaller red objects, spaced roughly 2,000 feet apart, each releasing a red ray. The lower parts then retracted into the uppermost one.

Radarbestätigung und Manöver Albuquerque radar detected a target 39 miles ahead of the jet on matching course, lacking transponder response. The object vanished visually for 30 seconds, reappeared, and bathed the jet in bright red light, impairing the pilot’s instrument visibility. It held position ahead briefly, blinked off, repositioned behind the left wing, advanced again, with radar suggesting a merge. Both executed left turns over Winslow, Arizona, tracked by Los Angeles Center. Beyond Flagstaff, it ascended at 30° westward, vanishing in under 10 seconds.

Zeugen, Beweise und Bedeutung Crew members served as primary witnesses in this aviation-related encounter with multi-sensor data: visual, radar from ground/air centers. Cited in NICAP, Sparks, Hynek (1974), Shough (NARCAP TR-6, 2002). Highlights UAP interaction with aircraft, radar-visual correlation, high-altitude maneuvers defying known tech.
