Background

In November 1975, the NORAD 24th Region senior director's log documented a series of UFO incursions over nuclear missile launch sites and bomber bases across the northern United States.

These events involved unidentified objects displaying apparent intelligent behavior, pursued unsuccessfully by Air Force fighters.

The Incident

On November 8, two to seven UFOs appeared over Montana, described as "large red to orange to yellow objects" with smaller lights.

F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept, but as they approached, the objects' lights dimmed and reappeared only when the fighters retreated.

The following days saw additional sightings including an "orange white disc" over other installations.

Witness Accounts

  • Objects described as "large red to orange to yellow objects" with smaller lights
  • An "orange white disc" sighted over installations
  • Objects hovered as low as ten feet

Investigation

According to the Washington Post, a string of supersensitive nuclear missile launch sites and bomber bases in Montana, Michigan, and Maine were visited by unidentified low-flying objects.

The Air Force sent fighter planes in unsuccessful pursuit.

Defense Department reports confirmed UFOs were pursued by fighters after hovering over three nuclear missile launch sites in 1975.

Significance

The incursions suggested reactive, intelligent behavior by the objects, as they responded to the approach of fighter jets.
