UK MoD Begins Proactive Release of UFO Files
Background
On May 14, 2008, the UK Ministry of Defence began the proactive release of its entire archive of UFO files through the National Archives. This decision was driven by an overwhelming number of Freedom of Information requests about UFOs β more than on any other subject.
Background
The UK Ministry of Defence faced unprecedented demand for UFO-related information. Freedom of Information requests on UFOs exceeded those for any other topic. This prompted the proactive release of the full archive.
The Release
The first batch consisted of eight files. These generated around two million downloads within a month. The program made files available through the National Archives.
Scope and Process
A total of 160 files, some containing hundreds of pages, comprised tens of thousands of pages. Each required individual redaction review. The release was expected to be completed by 2011.
Key Personnel
Nick Pope served as consultant facilitating the release program. His expertise helped manage the process.
Content
The files contained mostly mundane sightings. However, they also included extraordinary accounts from civil and military pilots. These were corroborated by radar evidence.
