W-72: F/A-18F sees white drone-like object
An F/A-18F Super Hornet from VFA-11 encountered a white object resembling a drone or missile in the W-72 area off Virginia at 17,000 feet. The crew saw it pass closely with an exhaust trail, but no radar detected it.

Am 27. Juni 2013 um 12:20 Uhr hatte ein F/A-18F Super Hornet der Strike Fighter Squadron 11 (VFA-11, „Red Rippers“), gestartet von der Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia, eine Begegnung in der W-72-Warnzone vor den Küsten von Virginia und North Carolina. Das Flugzeug flog in 17.000 Fuß Höhe, als die Besatzung ein weißes Objekt optisch erfasste, das die Größe und Form einer Drohne oder Rakete hatte.
Beobachtung
Das Objekt stieg auf und zog mit etwa 200 Fuß seitlichem Abstand rechts am Jet vorbei. Es zeigte eine sichtbare Abgasspur. Weder das Super Hornet noch die Basis NAS Oceana registrierten einen Radarkontakt.
Reaktion
Die Navy warnte Einheiten vor Gefahren durch ungenehmigte Drohnenflüge. Der Vorfall unterstreicht wachsende Bedenken hinsichtlich unbekannter Objekte in militärischen Lufträumen .
