Background
In May 2018, The Black Vault filed FOIA case #FOIA-0260-2018 with the DIA to obtain foundational documents for the Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program and its successor. The request specifically sought outlines, mission statements, and objective documents to clarify the true nature of these programs.
The formulation of the request had to account for varying narratives about whether AAWSAP and AATIP were the same program with different names or entirely separate initiatives. The request was carefully constructed to include all variations of nomenclature to ensure comprehensive coverage regardless of which version proved accurate.
