Background
On April 19, 2023, Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick, director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee for an open hearing on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. During the session, he shared video footage captured by an MQ-9 drone in South Asia on January 15, 2023. The video showed an object with an apparent atmospheric wake moving across the sensor's field of view. Kirkpatrick explained that after analyzing the full motion video, including additional footage with longer focal length and commercial flight data, AARO assesses the object was likely a commercial aircraft. The trailing cavitation was identified as a sensor artifact resultant of video compression. The case resolution remains pending final review.
