Background
On March 15, 2024, the Department of Defense Freedom of Information Division responded to case number 23-F-1429. The release provided nine pages of the Joint Staff's May 2023 guidance on UAP reporting and material disposition. Previously withheld as non-public information by Pentagon officials, the documents became accessible following a request filed by Douglas Dean Johnson on August 31, 2023. The release contained only minimal redactions despite its earlier classification as Controlled Unclassified Information. This disclosure marked the first public availability of the detailed military reporting procedures.
