Department of Defense Inspector General
The Department of Defense Inspector General (DoD IG) is a U.S. government oversight agency founded in 1982 under the Inspector General Act. It conducts independent audits, investigations, and evaluations of DoD programs to prevent waste, fraud, and abuse. In UAP/UFO contexts, the DoD IG evaluated the Pentagon's handling of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), issuing a classified report in August 2023 and an unclassified summary on January 25, 2024. The report criticized the DoD's uncoordinated, service-specific approach lacking an overarching UAP policy, posing risks to national security and flight safety. It issued 11 recommendations, including integrating UAP roles into procedures, which DoD officials accepted. The IG remains active in oversight, promoting transparency amid public and congressional interest.
