The National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC) was established in October 1993 as a successor to the Foreign Technology Division (FTD), which had operated since 1961. Located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, NAIC serves as the primary Department of Defense producer of foreign air and space intelligence. The organization evolved from the Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC), founded in 1951, which pioneered computer-assisted aircraft analysis and technical intelligence during the Korean War and Cold War. NAIC was renamed the National Air and Space Intelligence Center (NASIC) on February 15, 2003. The center supports warfighters, force modernizers, and national policymakers with predictive intelligence products on foreign air and space capabilities. In 2008, NASIC expanded with over 100,000 square feet of new facilities, becoming the largest intelligence facility of its kind in the Air Force. The organization continues operating under the U.S. Air Force's intelligence command structure.
