Donald Engen, as FAA Administrator, was involved in the investigation of the JAL 1628 UFO encounter over Alaska in 1986. He was a United States Navy vice admiral who served from 1942 to 1978, reaching the rank of vice admiral. He participated in World War II and the Korean War, and was awarded the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit, and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was appointed Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration on 10 April 1984 and held this role until 2 July 1987. He later served as Director of the National Air and Space Museum from 1996 until his death in 1999. He died on 13 July 1999 in a glider accident near Minden, Nevada.
