CIA Briefed on Japan Airlines 1628 UFO Encounter Over Alaska
In January 1987, the CIA was briefed on the November 1986 Japan Airlines Flight 1628 encounter over Alaska. The FAA was selling the crew audio tapes, air controller statements, pilot drawings, and radar images. The case became one of the most well-documented pilot UFO encounters in history.

Background
Following the Japan Airlines 747 encounter with a UFO over Alaska in November 1986, the FAA was selling a package of the crew audiostatapes, air controller statements, pilot drawings, and radar images. The CIA received a briefing on the incident in January 1987. MUFON membership was up 10 percent in two months following the case.
