E. U. Hathaway was a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel who served as an aide to Senator Richard Russell. In early October 1955, while traveling by train through the Soviet Union between Atjaty and Adzhijabu with Russell and Reuben Efron, a CIA officer, they witnessed two unconventional disc-shaped aircraft. The objects took off vertically, revolved, emitted sparks or flames, and passed overhead, accompanied by searchlights. Soviet train staff reacted excitedly, drawing curtains. The observers reported these as flying saucers to U.S. authorities, though Russell later deemed publicity unwise. Hathaway's role linked military intelligence to this notable Cold War-era UFO sighting.
